Fraser Thomas prepared multiple resource consent applications, designed stormwater management
systems, designed machine foundations, discharge stack and utility buildings, and supervised construction for an
industry leading, 600 tonne per day scrap metal processing facility incorporating one of only two scrap metal
shredding plants in NZ.
All consents were successfully negotiated for non-notified processing and were summarily granted
for the site located in Auckland.
Consents included:
- Groundbreaking Industry and Trade Practices consent to operate a scrap metal recycling and shredding facility.
An Environmental Management Plan for the proposed activity was prepared to support this consent. Stormwater
treatment for the high risk status activity included oil and grease
separation and sand filtration. The shallow depth of existing services
applied challenging constraints in availability of depth for live
storage
- Stormwater discharge consent, incorporating live surface stormwater storage to comply with pre and post
development stormwater discharge hydrological neutrality
- Air discharge consent from the scrap metal shredding plant, with
assistance from FTL
- Land Use
- Tradewaste
- Contaminated Site Remediation
The shredder and associated sorting equipment will divide the infeed scrap into ferrous, non-ferrous and waste
streams. The scrap shredding machine enables dramatic improvements in efficiencies in handling, processing and
transporting of scrap metal.
