The Aotea Centre is a multi-level theatre complex, providing Auckland
with an international class entertainment venue.
Fraser Thomas Ltd was commissioned by Auckland City Council to
design and supervise the construction of an 80 m long retaining wall of up to 8 m height
within a confined space, and abutting the adjacent arterial road system along the access
road at the Centre. Prior to commencement of the wall design, a borehole and laboratory
investigation of the site was carried out to determine soil parameters for design.
The retained soil profile
comprises soft to stiff residual silts, clays and sands of the Waitemata Group underlain
by the parent siltstone and sandstone bedrock.
Important aspects of the project were the presence of a
pre-existing slip failure in the retained slope, the presence of weak soils in the wall
foundations and the surcharge imposed on the retaining wall by a steep cut slope above the
wall crest.
